A few hours ago, Safaricom and Paypal struck a deal that will see the elimination of middlemen in this core transaction process. The agreement now makes it easy for Paypal users to withdraw and deposit money directly from and into their Mpesa.

Below is how to go about the process.

PAYPAL TO MPESA

To withdraw funds from your Paypal account into your Mpesa number, follow these simple steps. 

• Access the Paypal- Mpesa mobile money portal here. https://www.paypal-mobilemoney.com/m-pesa
• Click 'Get started'
• Input the number you want to link your Paypal account to.
• Enter the verification code sent to the number to complete the registration.

And that's it. You will then be able to withdraw funds directly from Paypal into your Mpesa account. You will be charged a 3% exchange/ conversion fee.

MPESA TO PAYPAL

To deposit funds into your Paypal account from your Mpesa, follow these steps.

• Open the MPesa menu from your phone.
• Select Paybill option.
• Select Buy Goods And Services and enter the Paybill Number: 800088.
• For the account number, enter the mobile number you have linked to your Paypal account in the above 'PAYPAL TO MPESA' step 1.
• Enter the amount in Kshs and press Send.

Funds will be deposited instantly into your Paypal address. You will be charged a 4% exchange/conversion fee.

Before this wonderful integration, common and popular methods that were being used for the transfer of funds between Paypal and Mpesa were:

PAYPAL TO MPESA

Pesapay online

This is a fast service to transfer money from your Paypal account to your Mpesa.

You need to send the amount from your Paypal account to their Paypal account.

They will then process the conversion for you and transfer the funds to your Mpesa account.

On average, it takes around 5 minutes for your request to be processed.

Procedure

• Proceed to pesapayonline.com
• Click the Paypal to Mpesa calculator to know how much you're going to receive from the transaction
• Send the amount you want to transact from your PayPal to their PayPal. You'll first need to contact them with a brief description of the transaction you want to be processed.
• Wait for a maximum of 5-7 minutes to receive the money in your Mpesa account

CLAM

Clam is one of the cheapest yet fast ways to transfer your Paypal money into your Mpesa account.
It's a recently launched service by the development studio; Cafrecode that can be accessed by visiting clam.cafrecode.com

Chura

This was the first service that I used to transfer money from my Mpesa account directly to my Paypal account. It took me less than 5 minutes to go through the easy interactive dialog box that popped up on my phone
It cost me a fair amount of around $1.50  for the exchange service of $20.

Procedure

• Go to www.chura.co.ke/mpesa2paypal
• Select the option to transfer funds from Mpesa to your Paypal account.
• Walk through the guidelines provided. You will be notified the amount you need to send from your Mpesa in order for your Paypal account to be credited with the desired amount. (this amount includes the transaction fee)

If the Chura's Mpesa2Paypal service is down, go to Chura's alternative service; Chura Virtual Card to load funds onto your Paypal account from your Mpesa. Chura Virtual Card

Procedure

• Visit www.chura.co.ke/cvc/
• Create an account or login if you already have an account
• Follow the guidelines and enter the details to create a Chura Virtual Card
• Once created, load any amount you wish by clicking the 'New card' button under 'My cards'(You must be logged in)
• Follow the guidelines to transfer funds from Mpesa to the Chura Virtual Card
• Link the Chura Virtual Card to your Paypal account by clicking the 'Add a bank account or card' in your Paypal account.

Side note:
Other methods to transfer Mpesa money to Paypal and vice versa include using the Equity Bank transfer service.

I have not explained the procedure since it takes longer for the transfer request to be processed; about 3 days.
