In this
article, you are going to learn how to plan your blogging work from experienced
professionals.
We have
broken the tedious process into a few easy to understand steps
Step 1:Starting
1)Background
decision Decide on what your site will be about e.g. DIY tutorials,
science, tech, news etc.
2)Choose
a hosting website platform for your site.
What if I
don't know how to code? You'd probably ask yourself.Don't worry.
There are
a range of free hosting websites to choose from. They all offer the same
service; site building and domain hosting all for free. There is no way of
ranking them as to which one is the best.It all depends with the customisations
that you are seeking.
I'll
provide a short description for the first 3 platforms and list the rest other
popular platforms that you could check out.
Blogger
This
google powered site is among the top site builders and hosting platforms. Its's
quite easy to use, thanks to it's user-friendly design and the best for you if
you are looking to publish a simple site in the shortest time possible.
Wordpress
This is a
huge platform that has over 76.5 million blogs and counting! It's users benefit
from the large availability of customisation widgets and plugins. This is the best
option for an advanced user.
Wix

This
platform offers very beautiful, creative as well as professional looking
websites thanks to it's wide variety of ready made templates for any type of
website.
Other
popular platforms include:
Weebly
Squarespace
Blog
3)Choose
your free domain address You'll be asked to input this
once you click 'Create my website' tab in any one of the above sites.
You may
choose,say; 'myfreedomain.com'
Depending
on your website builder platform, your address will be changed to;
myfreedomain.blogspot.com
for Blogger
myfreedomain.wordpress.com
for Wordpress and so on...
Tip
When
choosing your domain name, try to be as unique as possible.
Choose a
name or phrase that isn't used by many sites. This will help in SEO(Search
Engine Optimisation).
Now that
you have your website ready to be built, let's go to step 2
Step 2: Customisation
1)Choose
a website name This will be seen at the header section of your website page. It
should be catchy.
2)Type at
least 5 posts. Neither too short nor too short. Do not publish, at least not
yet.I am going to explain this later in this article.
3)Choose
a template There are a variety of templates offered by various hosting
sites.Choose one convenient for the type of content you are posting
4)Customise Now
go to the header section, page list, footer and edit them to look as stylish as
possible.
Step 3: Buying a custom domain
If you
intend to monetise your website, you will come to realise that you'll make more
money when your site has a custom domain than when you are using a free domain.
The
reason is simple. Both the reader and the marketing company that will pay you
for the ads or any other form of product promotion needs to know that you are a
serious blogger. You need to show these two parties that you are willing to
make a little sacrifice to publish quality content.
A custom
domain puts you at a better position in gaining traffic and getting
advertisement offers than when using a free domain.
Below are
the best domain registrars
1. 1and1
This is my recommended
site to obtain your custom domain. It boasts having a total of 3,597,003
domains registered and it's therefore one of the largest domain registrars.
It's extremely
user-friendly with a very dedicated customer care service team.
What even makes it
better is that for the first year, you get a mindblowing discount of $14 which
means you only pay $0.99!! A deal you won't get anywhere else.In addition to
that you get a free SSL certificate.
Click here to claim this discount and get
your dream custom domain!!
Other domain registrars
are:
2. Godaddy
3. Namecheap
4. Hostgator
5. Name.com
TIP
You will need to first
input your desired custom domain to check for availability.
Remember, Be Creative.
Setting up a third-party
URL After the purchase
you need to link or replace your free domain name to your newly purchased
custom domain. In simpler terms, a good example would be; to change your
'myfreedomain.blogspot.com' to 'myfreedomain.com'.
Your hosting platform
will provide you with the instructions on how to go about this.
Step 4: Introducing your site to the world
After choosing your
website name, customising your website and having at least 5 ready to publish
articles, now it's time to go public.
1)Publish the 5+ ready
articles. As I mentioned earlier
it's highly recommended that you do this before going public. The reason behind
it is to prevent your new traffic from coming to your site and be pushed away
by a big under construction sign. These articles will give your very
first audience a touch of what your site is about.
2)Market your site There are several ways of doing this;
- Social media
>Create awareness through facebook, google+,twitter and other
platforms to get traffic
- Building ad
campaigns > These will cost you a little amount of money but they
are a perfect way to gain traffic
- Traffic exchange
program > What these basically do is site promotion. For every site
you visit under these programs, you receive a visitor back to your link.
- Submit your
website to Social Bookmarking Sites. > This will cost you a very
small amount compared to the amount of traffic that you'll receive back to
your site. It's very effective. To see various cheap deals for
Bookmarking, visit SEOClerks.
3)Submit your site to
major search engines This
is very important. It presents your site to major search engines so that if
someone searches content on them and your site contains related content, it
will pop up among the results. This is a Must Do. The process is usually easy
since you just need to search for the search engine webmaster tool and click
'add site' and then follow the steps shown.
To submit your site to
Google Search Engine. Go to Google Webmaster Tools
To submit your site to
Bing Search Engine. Go to Bing
Webmaster Tools
Step 5: Monetise your website
After you have published
your articles and started gaining traffic, now it's time to monetise your
website.
The best ways to
monetise your website is through ad networks and affiliate marketing programs.
The leading ad network
for websites is Google AdSense. To sign up with them, you need to have
substantial content(another importance of the first +articles) and an easy
to navigate website layout.
Other ad networks
include:
Infolinks
The only requirement for
these is just a user-friendly website that's easy to navigate.
And that's it.
Within less than a month
from startup, following this work schedule, you should have a considerable
audience and even better, you'll be earning from it.
Additional
recommendations include;
- Making your site secure and rank higher in search
engines by purchasing an SSL certificate from SSL.com
- Optimising your site e.g. by making it faster by
installing a Cache Plugin, improving search keywords etc.
- Posting regularly to increase and maintain your
audience.
Good luck!
Hope to see your website
soon.
